EastSide Community Learning Center Foundation

Will Robinson

In connection with the School’s move to its present facility in 2005, the Board of Directors of the School formed an affiliated corporation, East Side Community Learning Center Foundation, to be the owner of the new facilities and the manager of the broader community learning center activities. The Foundation  is a separate IRS 501(c)(3) qualified non-profit tax exempt corporation. The corporate officers and directors of the School are also the officers and directors of the Foundation. The Foundation also is the primary fund raising vehicle for the School. The Foundation’s federal taxpayer identification number is 20-4215109.

Will Robinson is the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Foundation. Will was the Executive Director of the School from its second year through July 2007 during which time the School achieved significant acclaim and even national recognition. Will has been the inspiration for the School and the Board with his vision that “every child will learn”. Will believed that to be successful with many of our students it was necessary to treat the entire culture in which they live. Therefore he conceived of the idea of creating a “community learning center” that could not only serve our students during the regular school day but also serve them, and their families and the neighborhood, during the other hours of the day and week.

Thus, in order to make a reality of the community learning center vision, in 2007, the Board promoted Will to become the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Foundation responsible for fund raising, community relations and the management of the community learning center.

Fundraising: Every Child Will Learn Campaign

In connection with moving into our new facility in 2005 we embarked on an ambitious fund raising program named “Every Child Will Learn”. Our new facility is a wonderfully sturdy building erected in the 1960’s but it was in need of significant infrastructure upgrades, including replacing all the electrical, mechanical, and HVAC equipment (including adding air conditioning to facilitate the use of our building during our extended school year in the summer), replacing the roof, upgrading all of the bathrooms (including to make them handicap accessible), improving our external and interior security features and upgrading all of our communication and other technology facilities. We also have sought to raise funds to purchase much needed teaching aids.

The total estimated costs to meet our needs is about $5.5 million. To date we have raised about $2.5 million for these projects. With our funds in hand we started our project with the highest priority educational needs and in September 2007 we proudly opened our brand new library and computer lab and we had substantially improved all of our information technology. By September  2008 we will have replaced the roof and the roof top mechanical equipment, installed new external security lighting, remodeled the entrance foyer for better security and substantially upgraded the teachers’ lounge.

During the course of our fundraising we were offered a $500,000 grant to substantially upgrade our gym and locker rooms and another $500,000 grant to completely redo our playing fields and playground. These were things we wanted to do in the long term but there were other things of higher priority so they were not even within our $5.5 million project list. However we were delighted to receive these magnanimous contributions and we expect to have these projects finished as well by September 2008. And then we will really have some magnificent athletic facilities for our students and the community.

So as of  the beginning of 2008 we need another $3 million to complete our infrastructure upgrades. Your contribution will be gratefully received, payable to “East Side Community Learning Center Foundation” and mailed to the Foundation at 3000 N. Claymont Street, Wilmington, Delaware 19802.
